A new study published in the World Journal of Men’s Health by researchers at the University of Miami in the United States reveals that particles of the new coronavirus can remain in the penile tissue even after the patient’s recovery contributing to the possible development of erectile dysfunction.
Study lead project researcher Professor Ranjith Ramasamy stated, “Covid-19 can cause endothelial dysfunction in organs other than the lungs and kidneys.
The infection causes the cells lining the inside blood vessels to become incapable of carrying out their functions, consequently affecting the tissues fed by them.
The pilot study examined the penile tissue of two men who had been infected with Covid-19 and two who had not been infected. All four had undergone the same surgery to implant a prosthesis intended to treat severe cases of erectile dysfunction.
Researchers found the tissues of the two infected patients had traces of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and evidence of endothelial dysfunction.
Researches also observed that men who previously did not complain of erectile dysfunction developed severe erection problems after getting Covid-19.
“This suggests that people infected with the coronavirus need to be aware that erectile dysfunction may be an adverse effect and should see a doctor if they develop symptoms related to erection problems,” Ramasamy concluded.
