A Bridge Too Far Expensive

The next time you become upset at being issued a driving fine, remember Zhang, the thirty-four-year-old truck driver from China.

Zhang was driving an overloaded truck packed with sand across a concrete bridge when the bridge collapsed.

After the yearlong investigation, Chinese authorities concluded the collapse was a result of the excessive weight of the trucks payload , 110 tonnes.

Despite Zhang’s claim that he was under orders from his employer, the government fined Zhang the cost of replacing the bridge, US$35 million dollars.

Based on the average Chinese truck driver salary it will take Zhang approximately 30,000 years to pay the fine.
